4 reasons you may be tired all the time

Constant fatigue can be blamed on being too busy, too stressed or not getting enough sleep however, sometimes there can be other causes that go beyond the obvious. If you are experiencing fatigue that is getting in the way of your life, you should contact your GP or local healthcare professional to identify any underlying health issues.

The home doctor experts at House Call Doctor have four reasons why you may be tired all the time.

Anaemia

You may experience anaemia when your red blood cells or level of haemoglobin in the blood is lower than normal. Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body and is essential in keeping you from feeling run down. The most common cause of anaemia is iron deficiency. The groups of people most likely to develop anaemia include:

  • Menstruating women
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Babies
  • Adolescents in puberty
  • Vegetarians
  • People with cancer and other chronic illnesses

Thyroid

Your thyroid can make you feel weak and tired if it isn’t producing enough of its hormones. Left untreated, the symptoms can worsen over time. Fortunately, thyroid issues are easily detected through a simple blood test.

Sleep disorders

Sleep apnoea occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat are unable to keep your airways open. This leads to loud snoring, tossing and night-time choking and gasping that can disrupt your sleep. Usually people who are overweight or obese experience sleep apnoea.

Depression

Mental health can affect your sleep. Depression affects how you think, feel, act, and communicate and can impact your daily life. These persistent feelings of sadness and frustration can make you feel tired and emotionally drained and exhausted. There is no single cause of depression and it can be related to a number of factors, such as family history, personality, drug or alcohol abuse, and chronic medical conditions.
